Why most transformations fail

And it's not what you think

By Asar Paul T · Founder & Lead Consultant, Stiemfield Global Convergence

Every year, organisations spend billions on transformation. New systems. New strategies. New innovation programmes. And every year, most of them fail.

The consulting industry has a standard explanation: bad technology, poor strategy, or resistance to change. I disagree.

My career began not in a boardroom, but in the field. During my National Youth Service Corps year in Osun State, I served as State Project Manager for Digital Literacy for All — a community development service initiative under NITDA's DL4ALL programme. I coordinated digital literacy training across communities, working with local leaders, schools and grassroots organisations to deliver practical technology skills to Nigerians who had been left behind by the digital economy.

That experience revealed a pattern that has stayed with me ever since: transformation fails because five critical forces are managed in isolation.

Three of them form the core: Strategy, Execution and Management. Two amplify it: Technology and Innovation.

When these forces are disconnected, transformation stalls. A strong strategy with weak execution produces nothing. Strong technology with weak management produces bypassed systems. Strong innovation with weak strategy produces scattered pilots.

The five forces are not additive. They are multiplicative.

The multiplicative principleConvergence Score = Strategy × Technology × Innovation × Execution × Management

If any one force is weak, the entire system underperforms.

This is why most diagnostics fail. They assess one force at a time. They produce reports on technology, or strategy, or change management — but they never assess the connections between them.

At Stiemfield we do things differently. We assess all five forces together. We produce evidence, not opinions. And we design the sequence that connects them.

We are a management consultancy specialising in convergence. We are a global firm, rooted in Africa. That means we bring global rigour to African contexts — and African insight to global challenges.

The result is not just a diagnosis. It is an architecture for sustainable transformation.

If your transformation has stalled — or if you are planning one and want to avoid the common failure patterns — start with the free Self-Check. In ten minutes you will see where your convergence gaps are likely to sit.

Because transformation doesn't fail because of bad technology. It fails because of disconnected forces. And disconnected forces can be connected.
